Zach Cregger Links The Flood to Weapons and Resident Evil

Zach Cregger says his upcoming sci-fi thriller The Flood completes a creative period that also produced Weapons and Resident Evil. During a Resident Evil Reddit AMA, Cregger explained that he wrote all three projects in the same post-Barbarian burst of activity. According to Cregger, the films were all ready to move forward, and he was waiting to see which one could enter production first. He described the projects as “3 peas in a pod,” while noting that audiences may recognize a shared energy across them despite their different surfaces. Cregger also characterized The Flood as the least traditionally horror-focused of the three movies. He said the film still includes horror elements and moments, but may ultimately be the most unsettling. The comments frame The Flood as the conclusion of a particular creative chapter rather than an indication that Cregger plans to leave horror behind. Dread Central previously reported that The Flood follows a deep-space captain and her crew as they investigate a mysterious signal from a distant world. The crew reportedly discovers an alien artifact with the ability to affect time, reality, and their sanity, leading to an encounter with an incomprehensible intelligence. The outlet described the project as a sci-fi thriller with Alien-like qualities. Warner Bros. acquired The Flood and fast-tracked it through New Line. Amblin Entertainment is producing with Vertigo Entertainment, whose producers on Weapons are Roy Lee and Miri Yoon. The Flood is currently scheduled for release on August 11, 2028. Meanwhile, Sony Pictures has released behind-the-scenes footage from Resident Evil showing Cregger directing a practical effect involving a large blood-filled bubble bursting. The film is not a direct adaptation of one of the video games, according to Dread Central, but is intended to recreate the experience of playing them. Resident Evil follows Bryan, played by Austin Abrams, a medical courier whose assignment in Raccoon City becomes a fight for survival. The movie includes elements associated with the games, including Umbrella, infected dogs, green herbs, healing spray, typewriters, and first-person sequences. The MPA has rated it R for strong bloody violence, gore, and language throughout. Resident Evil is scheduled to open in theaters and IMAX on September 18, 2026.
