When two rival gangs unexpectedly meet in a warehouse in Los
Angeles, violence is sure to ensue. But it's not the gang members causing
the trouble in this horror film--it's the zombies. A meteor filled with a
virus crashes into Los Angeles, and the results are far more grave than a
simple cold. The meteor brings with it a zombie-spawning spore, and it
forces the two gangs to join with the cops in order to survive the undead
apocalypse.

Music video director Dave Meyers's debut film is an updated
version of the 1986 shocker of the same name, featuring Sean Bean (THE LORD
OF THE RINGS trilogy) in the title role of a chillingly sadistic hitchhiker.
Twenty-something couple Grace (a mini-skirted Sophia Bush from ONE TREE
HILL) and Jim (Zachary Knighton) embark on a road trip across the American
Southwest to meet up with Grace's friends on vacation. Things get off to a
bad start when they almost run over a hitchhiker in the middle of a
rainstorm, and then leave him to fend for himself. When they later run into
the man (Bean), who calls himself John Ryder, at a gas station, their
consciences get the best of them, and they agree to give him a ride to the
next town. The couple's passenger quickly turns on his hosts, and although
they manage to escape, he follows them and makes their lives a living hell.
Soon, Grace and Jim find themselves framed for John Ryder's vicious crimes,
and they are on the run from both the authorities and the Hitcher, of whose
existence no one but they are aware. As their flight gets increasingly
desperate and the Hitcher's methods of torture more brutal, Grace and Jim
struggle desperately to discern what the man wants, and why he has chosen
them. The film benefits from its beautiful, desolate desert setting, as it
highlights the solitude and desperation of the couple's situation. Despite a
few problems of plausibility and the frequent foolishness of the
protagonists--to which horror fans are well-accustomed--THE HITCHER delivers
fright in all the right places, as well as beautiful women and plenty of
gore.

Written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, PAN'S LABYRINTH
is a thrilling, violent fairy tale set in post-Civil War Spain. Ivana
Baquero stars as Ofelia, a young girl who moves with her mother, Carmen (Ariadna
Gil), into the home of Captain Vidal (Sergi López), in an abandoned mill in
the middle of dark, dangerous woods. Vidal is leading his team of soldiers
against resistance fighters--and he will do whatever is necessary to kill
every last one of them. As Vidal bosses around the pregnant Carmen, a flying
creature leads Ofelia through a garden labyrinth and into an underground
cave ruled by Pan (HELLBOY's Doug Jones), who believes that Ofelia might be
the lost princess of this strange yet magical place. To prove she is
royalty, Ofelia must complete three tasks, each more difficult and
terrifying than the previous one. Meanwhile, Vidal is becoming more and more
paranoid, torturing and murdering seemingly at will. Del Toro (THE DEVIL'S
BACKBONE, HELLBOY, CRONOS) creates a marvelous battle between good and evil,
between heroes and villains, in both the real world aboveground and the
mystical land below. Baquero gives a compelling performance as the
terrorized Ofelia, who is befriended by Mercedes (Maribel Verdú), a woman
who harbors some secrets of her own. Stellar production design, superb
special effects, and a stirring score by Javier Navarrete add to the scary
fun. Selected as the closing-night entry in the 2006 New York Film Festival,
PAN'S LABYRINTH is a captivating story that is not for the squeamish.

Prolific director Takashi Miike (AUDITION) keeps finding new
ways to test the boundaries of on-screen violence. ICHI THE KILLER is a
masterful piece of filmmaking, simultaneously funny and horrific, but it’s
only for viewers with strong stomachs. One character, Kakihara (Japanese
indie film heartthrob Tadanobu Asano), a masochistic yakuza lieutenant, has
slits in his cheeks through which he blows cigarette smoke and gleefully
hacks off his own tongue to apologize for his impudence. Then there’s
eponymous assassin (Nao Omori), a painfully shy but sadistic young voyeur
who wears a leather superhero outfit to work. Manipulated by the cagey and
mysterious Jijii (English translation: "Gramps," Shinya
Tsukamoto), Ichi lashes out and massacres those Jijii deems bullies, and
basically anyone else who upsets his frail psyche. Jijii uses the demented
lad to start a bloody war between rival yakuza factions. Miike’s film is
full of grotesquely over-the-top violent set pieces, including flying
entrails, graphic mutilations, and even a severed human face splattered
against a wall and slowly sliding to the ground. It’s all captured with
kinetic camerawork and hyperactive editing. It’s not for everyone, but
bolder viewers will find it uniquely entertaining.
