  • Psychic medium Professor Robert Miles (Patrick Magee) lives a bitter life of solitude with the exception of a black cat, to which he has managed to forge a companionship in lieu of the feline attacking him at every turn. He's paid a visit by a young photographer named Jill Travers (Mimsy Farmer) whom wishes to return a piece of the professor's equipment she has found in an underground tomb. Miles wastes no time in attempting to hypnotize the woman, but is interrupted by the pestering cat as it inflicts deep scratches into the man's hand. Jill responds with a hurried exit, and soon after meets Inspector Gorley (David Warbeck) who employs her as a crime-scene photographer in the investigation of a rash of fatal accidents that have recently befallen the sleepy village. She discovers cat-like scratches on one of the hand of one of the victims, and soon learns that a black cat has been present during all of the incidents. Curiosity leads the photographer back to Miles' estate, where she learns all too agonizingly the history of the old man's estranged relationship with the black cat. While a less gruesome than usual outing from the "Godfather of Gore," Lucio Fulci's adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's classic tale is loose but effective in its own right. The ominous score in conjunction with Sergio Salvati's superb cinematography create a sense of claustrophobic tension, which adds a unique spin on the classic supernatural tale.

A Selenia Cinematografica production. Shot in Technovision in 1980 on location in the UK and at Rome studio interiors. Color by Eastmancolor. In widescreen. Released theatrically in New York City February 1984 in an MPAA R-rated version. Additional cast: Geoffrey Copleston (Inspector Flynn) and Daniela Dorio (Maureen). Additional credits: Franco di Girolamo (makeup) and Paolo Ricci (special effects). Rated BBFC 18 by the British Board of Film Classification.

  • George (Lovelock, AUTOPSY) is a hippie biker on his way to the countryside for a long weekend holiday. While stopping at a gas station, his motorcycle is accidentally hit by an attractive young girl named Edna (Galbo). The bike is rendered useless, so Edna offers him a ride, as long as they drop by her sister Katie's cottage first. The unlikely traveling companions get lost and stop at a farm for directions. There, George is greeted by a pair of employees from the experimental section of the Ministry of Agriculture as they test a new ultrasonic radiation device designed to drive parasites into killing each other. Meanwhile back at the car, Edna is violently pursued by a crazed man who appears to be already dead. After the agriculturists insure her it was merely the village loon, and the journey continues. Moments before they arrive at the cottage the same man who attacked Edna viciously murders Katie's husband. The police are quick to peg the wife as the primary suspect, and order George and Edna to remain in town during the investigation. As they lose faith in the fascist police force, the couple launches a secret investigation of their own. Suspecting the nearby agricultural experiments may be the cause of this morbid chain of events, they attempt to get more information from a local hospital. The result is a plethora of terrifying confrontations with zombies from the basement morgue--brought back from the dead to feast on the living.

A couple (Ray Lovelock and Cristina Galbo) travelling along the English countryside stop to get directions from a pair of Ministry of Agriculture workers who are testing an experimental device designed to drive crop-damaging insects into killing each other. While they plan their next stop, a man who has been dead for several days attacks--to be followed shortly thereafter by a full-scale zombie invasion--which could very well be a result of the agriculturist's distribution of ultrasonic radiation. A macabre, atmospheric Spanish-Italian co-production featuring extremely convincing performances and a haunting score by Giuliano Sorgini. The second half of the film contains enough gut-munching gore scenes to satisfy most horror fans, leading to an unexpected and eerie finale.

  • Lamberto Bava, son of Mario, made his solo directorial debut with this stylish, darkly comic film about an incredibly disturbed young woman. Bernice Stegers stars as Jane, a young New Orleans mother who regularly spurns her children to spend her afternoons with her lover, Fred. However, desperate for attention, her daughter drowns her brother and calls Jane at her lover's to tell her about it. As Jane and Fred race to the house, they end up in a horrible car crash which decapitates Fred. After a year in an asylum, Jane returns to New Orleans and makes Fred's old apartment her own. Soon, the building's super hears Jane carrying on a torrid affair, even though he never sees anyone enter or leave her apartment. A fabulous debut from the younger Bava, MACABRE is an effectively bizarre and stylish thriller.
